attack of the freaky tree babies

Ok. So, true story.

One day a week I walk with The Girls. They're my best friends, we grew up next door to each other, and once a week we go home for dinner with the parents, then drive off to the local state park, or the mall if it's cold, to walk and chat and catch up. Anyway, we live in the woods. Philly suburb, but it's the woods. We take backwoods roads, and driving back from the mall last week, I spotted what I refered to as a Freaky Tree Baby. Now, PA wildlife is pretty standard. You got your foxes, raccoons, deer, opossums, hawks, squirrels. Regular stuff. But this thing was climbing a tree really slowly, arms and legs spread like a baby, didn't have a tail... It was like a sloth or something, only there are no sloths up here.

Everyone said I was hallucinating, and I admit it was full dark and I could have been mistaken. But I really liked saying "freaky tree baby" so I kept telling everybody about it.

And then we went walking this monday again and we saw a fox and P starting screaming and it was hilarious 'cause she was so scared of the freaky tree baby.

And then tuesday night, on the 10 o'clock news, they found a sloth in middletown, upper providence, exactly where we were driving through! Vindication!!! I mean, there's a chance I was still seeing things, because the odds of a sloth surving outside in the cold for a week and a half are slim, but the coincidence of it is insane!

My mom laughed like a loon when I told her. Freaky tree baby, indeed.

freaky tree baby! ♥ Yeah, they never believe you until you get them out there in the woods. Then, out comes the fear! :P

I live in a small town just outside of Houston. As you may know, they call Houston the "Bayou City". Well, many of the small, more industrial towns are just the same. We have gullies, bayous, and levies scattered all over, even in my tiny town. Well, there's one particular road that leads from our town to the next one. We call it the "High Road" (yes, there is a corresponding "Low Road", in case you were wondering). The high road runs across the levie and is known to be home to an animal called a Nutra. Now, the nutras are sort of a legend in my town. Everyone says they know they exist, but nobody has ever seen one. I think I've seen a dead one, but I can't be sure. These things supposedly look like rats, only they are the size of a cocker spaniel, sometimes bigger.

Everyone is always afraid that they will break down on the high road and get eaten by a nutra. I've never heard of the human-eating nutra, but it just goes to show you how worked up people will get over things like this.

I know that story was random, but then again, so am I. Your freaky tree baby made me think of the nutras.

Now see, I think you should put this in a story! The team is traipsing through a forest when (fill in the blank) spots a Freaky Tree Baby. Everyone tells him he's crazy, and Teyla assures him that there are no animals that could be mistaken for Freaky Tree Babies on this planet, blah blah blah, and there's no ZPM, but the natives have (something useful/yummy) to trade and when the team goes back the elders excitedly tell them about the (exotic alien animal) they found, which has *never* been seen on (planet X) and isn't it *exciting* and they can't wait to show it off and...it's the Freaky Tree Baby! Vindication is so sweet!!

Ahem...or not. :)

i wouldve gotten out of the car to investigate this freaky tree baby...ok thats probably a lie but i have 2 friends that wouldve gotten out of the car to investigate...one day ill have to tell you the story of the bangor squatter (i was so sure it was going to bc a cracked out rapping murderer-so it being just a mouse was a might disappointing...or a relief-all depending how you look at it)...not as interesting as say your story (because "freaky tree baby"?! thats gold!) but similar...

Okay just three things -

1. Sloth connection. A little while back I made a comment on my LJ about the uncanny resemblance between Rodney and Sid the sloth from Ice Age (my 3 year old was watching it in the background). I further went on to discuss the obvious UST between Sid and Manny - y'know the one with all the hair.....coincidence?...I think not.

2. My reward for a spectacularly crappy day? - to re-read all your SGA fics. And oh wow! If they were great before - when I hadn't even seen the ruddy show - well, now they are just...sublime! Sometimes I just love crappy days...

3. I had a sudden stab of guilt just now when I realised that I hadn't thought about DT for probably the last couple of weeks when checking your LJ for updates. It's all been about the McShep....hangs head in shame...fails miserably at hiding happy smirk. So pancakes....?

Oh who am I trying to kid....

4. Still love DT! But God, you know how to distract a person....!!
