So I don't know how exactly I feel about the Tomrad thing, but I'm certainly not mad at Tom for breaking some fanfiction rule or something. You get into this fandom, this stuff might happen, because these are real people - although the characters in my fic are not, which is what always weirds me out about possibly meeting these people in person or going to concerts and stuff, because I have a very distinct separation from, say, the Brendon who's in my head, bouncing around with armfuls of puppies, and the Brendon who's actually a real boy, who I know nothing about.

So, whatever. I don't actually have a point, but I guess my biggest fear is that these people don't realize that. Like, I'm not actually acusing Brendon of being, whatever, in a committed sexual relationship with Spencer or being afraid of zombies masquerading as fangirls or being a Christmas elf in disguise (the fic that never was! SERIOUSLY!). And that's kind of stupid, because I'm hoping (HOPING) that these guys are smarter than that, but you never know. Ryro was pretty defensive about all the implied gay sex at one point, wasn't he?

WHATEVER. I'm not locking down my posts - hell, I hardly ever (if at all? can't remember) place a stupid disclaimer on my fics, so I'm just asking for something bad to happen - and my website is out there clearly marked with keywords and descriptions of exactly what is on the pages, and let's just hope I don't get, like, sued or something. Which would be so lame.

The small heart attack about that Certain Coasts post was totally justified - I mean, wouldn't you get all clammy and nauseous? Doesn't mean I can complain or bitch about it, though. That would also be lame.

Now I have to go off and figure out why the Ancients would have a tween-making machine on a off-world planet - any suggestions?

Tween-making machine = a machine that makes 10-to-12-year olds?

Well, turns people in tweens. Or, like, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen yr olds. They're not sure of their ages. There's no purpose!

Well, it could be an early prototype to give the Ancients longer life spans or reverse aging...

Maybe the tween-making machine has something to do with Accension? And it was at an outpost?

I was thinking that, but why would they need to be teenagers in order to ascend? Hmmmmmm.

Maybe an Ancient had an idea that recapturing some child-like innocence would lead to ascension? And then it didn't work so they stuck it in an outpost they used like some sort of extra-planetary basement.

I agree! I don't actually think that the real folks have much in common with the characters in the fics beyond the superficial surface stuff since we don't actually know these people (and quite frankly I don't really want to meet any of them).

Maybe the ancient's used it as a parenting tool! Like maybe Ancient's whose children were about to reach that age went off world to relearn the challenges of being at such a transistional age or something. Or you could go with the default reason being the Ancients were weird as hell.

I know little about stargate besides your fics, but maybe the machine was made as a precaution for any major catastrophe which thretened the population so that they could make people go back to a better baby-making age if there werent that many left to bear children.

I have no idea and my brain is dead from physics, forgive me

BABY-MAKING AGE! For some reason that sounds HILARIOUS to me!
From: [identity profile] belladonnaf66.livejournal.com
Oh yeah-the ancients made to relearn lessons and life. They got so old and realized that they didn't have the wisdom to ascend so they got a 'get outta jail free card' and got to try again. But only if there was a committee to go through to say, 'heh, you're so stupid we don't want you in our glowy club' or 'ok, have fun, we'll see you in the next go around'

or or. nope, that's all I got

Hey, FYI, [livejournal.com profile] helenish just wrote a fic where Rodney gets hit by a device on an off-world planet and regresses to 20, and her conceit was that it was actually a device that you're supposed to zen out with once a month that keeps you from aging, but Rodney poked at it a little too vigorously and BLAMMO, so... you could totally steal that one? (Please please do not ever ever think that you should NOT WRITE THIS because of this other fic, which has NO WILLIAM BECKETT IN IT, nor any PATRICK. I WANT THIS LIKE BURNING.)

and in regards to the tweenmaking, hmmmm, maybe the ancients had a better sense of humor then we thought? or like many other people said maybe it has something to do with ascension, as that seems to cover a lot of ground with the ancients. in any case i cant wait to see what you come up with cause i am so in love with your fics. also i adore the bandom/sga crossover, i read heavily in both fandoms and having them smooshed together? ftw. totaly.

if i were an ancient, i might want a tween making machine for diplomatic/spying purposes - i mean, tweens can be massively inquisitive, and get forgiven when they get caught doing things that might actually be espionage, because they might not know any better. and they can be fostered out, or sent to schools to bond with the kids of the leaders of whatever society the ancients are trying to manipulate this week, to introduce subversive social engineering. like a much more hands-on and *slightly* more subtle game. tweens might even have been overlooked during wraith incursions, in the latter days of the war, since a smart culling takes adults and leaves the next generation to mature and breed. or maybe tweens would be scooped up by the wraith and taken to their ships rather than eaten outright, allowing for onboard espionage!

i bet there are even more reasons for a tween-making machine.

halloween costume! parenting scheme (you know, communicate better with your kids at that awkward stage by becoming one temporarily)! city maintenance workers get tweenified when they need to work in tight conduits!

Does every sci-fi TV show have a set of Ancients? Because I know you're talking about SGA, but Farscape has them too. And I'm sure a bunch of other shows that I can't think of off the top of my head do, too.

I have a very distinct separation from, say, the Brendon who's in my head, bouncing around with armfuls of puppies, and the Brendon who's actually a real boy, who I know nothing about.
&
my biggest fear is that these people don't realize that.

Yes! I know! That's the thing- I wish there were a way of explaining that. I mean, I could use some sort of massive allegory of to a girl fantasizing about the boy she likes asking her out and planning every moment of it in her head.

The point is, we enjoy taking personalities we recognize and playing around with them as characters. We aren't freaks who actually believe any of this is happening (I don't speak for thems over at [livejournal.com profile] mcr_hardcore, I'm actually terrified of them), until the tinhatting starts, but for the most part, I've been completely impressed by how mature this fandom can be. Bandom (and fandom in general) has inspired so much creativity and so many intelligent discussions that it's easy to lose sight of the fact that some people don't separate, oh, slutty!Ryan with the one currently dating Keltie and living in terror of the fanfiction-writing girls. :D

Plus, the community and relations that are formed based on the simple fact that we all love these boys and their music is so completely amazing. There are some really amazing people in this fandom.

The 'tween making device was on another planet because it was put on a safe planet, so that Ancient parents and teenagers could take short trips together and swap ages for a few days -- it was a "walk in the other person's shoes" sort of thing, so that the parents would remember what it was like to have more hormones than red blood cells and the kids could see how their behaviour could affect other people.

In most of the eps I've seen, the people taken and fed on by Wraith are adults, so maybe tweens are less desirable to the Wraith. Remember the village where you had to kill yourself when you turned 25 in Childhood's End? Maybe they were on to something with what they thought, that anyone over a certain age was like catnip to space catfish vampires.

There's a good post here (http://fairestcat.livejournal.com/449918.html) about compartmentalization involved in fandom in general and bandom in particular that I found really spot-on. It's one of the hardest things to explain to outsiders about fandom, IMO. My older sister (not in fandom) once surprised me by asking whether I ever got fic story lines confused with canon. It's easy to forget that some people don't get it when you're friends with so many who do. Although, I think there are some segments of RPF fandoms that don't compartmentalize, but those are the unhealthy, deluded, RL-stalker-type minority.

The Ancient device could have the same purpose as the time-bubble John got stuck in 2.12 "Epiphany"; being turned into tweens gives the Ancients more time to learn how to ascend.

Isn't it great? I think about it like that almost exactly, but "compartmentalization" is a great simplifying term that I was missing.

Yep! There's a certain age at which sitting for long hours meditating must just start sucking for your joints, and/or senility sets in, you know? And then it's reset button time! But maybe they worked in another thing that sends you back to your preferred age when you're ready to ascend, because who wants to spend eternity as a tween? (and because you have to get the boys back to their real ages at some point, right?)

The blog was taken down for an unknown reason, so I'm still totally curious about it. I had the heart attack when I hadn't realized the slight name difference at first and thought it WAS Pete's blog!

As for the Pete Wentz-like Blog…that is *really* weird. I would have freaked out too.

Also, I was to shy to post this earlier but since I’m already going to post this…
