Go to one of my fics and pick a sentence or two (lucia's edit: substantial quotation that has context *g*) out from it. I'll try to guess which fic it's from. Anyone who can stump me gets to request a drabble in one of my existing universes, or post a pic (or prompt) and I'll write a drabble about it.
I totally suck at request drabbles 'cause I never even finished the last batch y'all gave me, so let's hope I don't get stumped :) Have at it!

Date: 2006-09-06 07:58 pm (UTC)I know, and we should know, and damnit...Sheppard should respect her position, even if he does have issues with COs, she's not one of those...technically. Even just a little, for ONCE, it should happen. Seriously, they should hire some women writers, what about the creators of Gilmore Girls, for like three episodes a year, where the women ARE IMPORTANT OMG! I don't like Carter, so I refuse to look at her. She puts me to sleep. Now Vala...okay, but no to Carter.

Date: 2006-09-06 08:08 pm (UTC)For me, honestly--I'd much rather see Sheppard in charge because I tend to disagree with Weir's more emotionally driven decisions most of the time. :P And I don't like the whole 'we can "talk" them down' kind of attitude she has in dangerous situations. Talking is not always the answer. But maybe, MAYBE if she were written better I'd like the character more.
But I would LOVE to see the other women on SGA like Teyla get some real, well written episodes. Ones where they're not in the background holding up the scenery.
I despise Carter. I kind of like Vala though at times her over the topness annoys me. But yeah...if we could have some kind of BALANCE to the female characters that would great. ::pokes the writers::

Date: 2006-09-06 08:27 pm (UTC)I don't want Sheppard in charge because he is even more emotionally charged than Weir. Well, more like his own emotional issues charged, but still. Talking is the first step though. If you don't try that, how can you save face with allies, nevermind Earth? This way at least they've expressed the desire and it doens't break some rule of war or something. Otherwise, they might be as bad as the Genii.
Rachel said she wanted more Teyla back story and use too. Which makes sense.
Vala I like, because she's very Cordelia-like. Says it like she sees it, screw diplomacy. The opposite of Weir, but still just as important. Carter I don't like more because she seems to be Little Miss Perfect, and I hate that. She needs flaws, make her more human and still the good guys.

Date: 2006-09-06 08:41 pm (UTC)I agree that talking is a start--but when it's obvious that talking is no longer going to do anything then it's time to actually DO something. I know so many people are torn in Hot Zone but I keep thinking my GOD talk Petersen down?? Like WTF!? :P But I absolutely admit to being biased against Weir anyway. ;)
Absolutely. And I think the secondary characters deserve the chance to have interesting storylines as much as the main characters do.
I liked Vala's directness. :P I didn't like the 'hooker of the Milky Way' vibe I got off her the first few episodes. ;) They toned it down which I was definitely glad for because if they hadn't I don't think I would have ever liked her.
I lost interesting in Carter back in S4. When they started making the ship more important, started making Carter ALWAYS right, started making her super woman I was absolutely disgusted with the character. At least in the first 2 1/2 seasons it was easier to respect her. The second they decided we needed to see Carter's love life on a near regular basis I tuned out. Which is why I am REALLY hoping they don't do the same stunt on SGA with Teyla an about who they "have feelings" for. *sigh*

Date: 2006-09-08 07:29 am (UTC)The talking makes sense to me. Perhaps because I come from such a combative family (you have no idea) so to me it seems that talking has to be tried as long as possible. In an effort to save lives, and maybe they couldn't have talked Petersen down, but everyone would have been locked down and *safe* that way. Even if they couldn't, they would have gained enough time to figure out a way that didn't expose more people to the virus.
I was watching Kavan's video on that, and yeah secondary characters are massively important. Imagine no Lorne with his "Crap. Come on, kids. Gotta go rescue your uncle again" type reactions when Sheppard's in trouble.
Admittedly, I haven't seen the first couple episodes Vala was in, but I think it was necessary, in order to show she's more than just The Body.
Carter is so Mary Sued, I can't see straight. She'd put half the HP, all of the SGA, and quite a few of the Buffy fic writers to shame. I was so tired of seeing her being right all the time. She can't be. Even Rodney wasn't. I doubt, honestly, that they'll divulge into the female character's love life. After all, they're doing the man's fantasies on SGA (or the ladies's with all the slash writing here lately). I did like Carter in "Hathor", but I liked Janet way more. She looked more out of her element but fighting anyway. That's what is missing in most of the women. The grit that makes them as tough as the men but still females and okay with that side too. It's either/or almost with the writers.

Date: 2006-09-08 07:18 pm (UTC)I disagree on the Petersen thing. ;) When Rodney says someone knows almost as much as him about Ancient tech that right there is a big neon blinking warning sign. They wouldn't have stopped him from getting through and talking would have been pointless once they were exposed and honestly if John hadn't done the puddlejumper nuclear run, had instead been locked in the gym like Weir wanted him to, a LOT of them would be dead now.
*g* I haven't had the chance to watch yet but yeah, Lorne, Zelenka...SGA has some awesome secondary characters that they should really use more.
OMG! *snerk* Absolutely!! I was so sick of 'SuperCarter'. There have been a few writers over the years that have managed to 'get' the female characters--they need to start giving lessons to the others I think. ;) But yeah, Janet was a wonderful character! She was a woman but strong and smart and I think was much easier for the fans to relate to than Carter who just had to blink her eyes and she'd come up with the right answer to everything under the sun--even things that were remotely her specialty. *sigh*
